On its way: the legendary advertisers' information pack: in which we explain the obvious in great detail and attempt to teach our grannies how to suck eggs.
(Plus special feature: why 'Word' files are almost always a bad idea).
Having to build this new site at short notice has, sadly, delayed completion of the pack. Meanwhile, here are the basic details.

If you need us to lay out your ad for you or are not able to supply it as a print-ready digital image file or as camera-ready artwork, there will be a 30% mark-up.
Most standard (raster) digital image file formats are ok: jp[e]g (uncompressed), tif[f] and pdf are preferred. Please make sure that these are greyscale, not colour, and are not less than 300 dpi/ppi. They should also be print size; or, if larger, in proportion.
We can accept Adobe Illustrator files ( .ai vector format) with text converted to outlines, but proprietory formats generated by DTP software can be problematic; so no Quark files, please, unless you can export them to eps or pdf. Note that we cannot under any circumstances accept files in Microsoft Publisher's native format '.pub'. If this is the only software you have available, please export the result as an image file: tif, png or jpeg (uncompressed) at 300 dpi and in greyscale, not colour, should all be possible; but not bmp or gif, please.
Camera-ready artwork is 'hard copy' on good-quality plain white paper or card, uncreased and unfolded. If printing from a word file or similar, please use black ink only and print at the highest resolution you can. A colour original or a black-and-white original printed with colour inks will take time to optimise for print and will attract the 30% processing charge.
Under some circumstances we can accept Word files, though in most cases these are suitable only as layout guides. Please talk to us before sending, though; you may need to send us the fonts separately, and, if they include an embedded image, you will need to send us the original image file as well.
If you don't know how to email an image file without embedding it in a word doc, or how to provide a font file via email, please ask us for advice. It is very simple once you know how.
Don't worry overmuch if you are advertising in several magazines (regional and/or national) and find that every single one wants slightly different dimensions. This is normal. Everybody has different design criteria, and some mags have less flexible production methods than others. We have noticed that some advertisers want to send us ads formulated according to Tykes News criteria, and don't understand why ours are not quite the same. Because, until very recently, Tykes has stuck to the old 'paste-up' method, it has been very difficult for them to re-size copy; they have, therefore, had to insist on very rigid specifications.
Stirrings has always prided itself on its adoption at the earliest opportunity of new technologies, so for us, fitting your (digital) copy to the physical dimensions we use for print takes no more than a few clicks of a mouse (more accurately, a graphics stylus). The dimensions we specify, therefore, are what we will print. They are guidelines; but the closer you can get to those dimensions, the better; unless you particularly want your carefully prepared images to look a little odd if we must stretch them vertically or horizontally in order to make them fit.
In fact, there is very little difference between the various sizes and dimensions used by most magazines. If in doubt about anything technical, please email us at adcopy@stirrings.org.uk
