Welcome to the Stirrings website. |

Stirrings was founded in 1974 by Trevor Sommers as The South Yorkshire Folk Diary, and has been published at least four times a year ever since. It acquired its current name in 1980, and has had a long and complicated history under a long and complicated series of editors. Trevor resumed the editorial reins in 1987, handing over to Raymond Greenoaken when he emigrated to New Zealand in 2001.
From issue 131 (March—May 2007) Gavin Davenport takes over as editor; Raymond continues as publisher, distributor and all-round mentor, with Malcolm Douglas handling layout/artwork duties. As of this issue, South Riding Folk Arts Network News is incorporated into Stirrings. Over the coming months, we will be archiving material from past issues here; meanwhile, see the links below for useful (and sometimes interesting) stuff. Issue number 137 (September—November 2008) is now available.reviewsPeople ask us from time to time what they need to do to get their cd reviewed in Stirrings. The answer is simple: send a copy to the editor. Include a press release or other information so that we know something about you and where readers can buy copies. We can't guarantee a review (sometimes a record is so bad that none of our reviewers will touch it, and occasionally reviewers go missing in action) but we always do our best to see that cds go to conscientious people who know, and are sympathetic to, the genre and are likely to have constructive things to say. See our contact page for email, phone and postal details. |
